News & Events – August 2010

Round Up

July was a rather unsettled month but our determined members managed a surprisingly good number of hours.

The Alderney fly out was thoroughly enjoyable with a club stroll across the island for lunch and then a ramble back around the edge.  Gloriously warm, the only decision being over or under the Bristol cloud for the last bit.  Does anyone have any photos for our wall of fame?

Micro Wind turbine numbers are increasing rapidly and there are now a large number that are not shown on CAA charts.  Although they are short enough to not be an issue when calculating MSA they can be a hazard if near an airfield, particularly smaller strips that have less readily available information to those flying in.  A press release has been issued by The General Aviation Awareness Council (GAAC).

Events & Social Evenings

Thursday 26th August  Club Night as it’s the last Thursday in the month.  Come along for a drink and a natter – about flying, what else!
Sunday 15th August  BBQ.  The Red Arrows are overnighting at Bristol and due to arrive at 1200 local.  What better way to watch your own private display (of arriving and parking) than a BBQ on the lawn.  They do obligingly park on the apron right outside the Bristol and Wessex so it’s great to watch the activities of the support crews.
Saturday 21st August  Fly out to Guernsey.  As everyone enjoyed Alderney so much we’ve had several requests to tackle another Channel Island and so off to Guernsey.  As usual, let us know if you wish to book an aircraft, have a spare seat, or are looking for one.  If you’re not based here at Bristol let us know if you’re flying out and we’ll see you there.
Thursday 11th November  CAA Safety Evening.  For those that have been to many before, this will be a little different.  Although still under the control of the CAA, the Safety Evening programme is now being run by Gasco.  More details to follow nearer the time.
Friday 17th December  Christmas Party.  Sorry to mention the “C” word now, but get the date in your diary.

Bristol & Wessex Catering

For the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of August (28th, 29th and 30th) show your membership card and get two meals for the price of one.

And Finally

The Katana is coming home.  We’re hoping to have the aircraft here next week, a fantastic fun, modern aeroplane and a great introduction to VP prop.  Give us a call to book your differences training now!
